We won’t leave the house without it. We panic when we can’t find it. We scurry to recharge it when the battery is low. We feel empty without it in our hands or nearby. We are constantly checking it. We are more attached to it than we realize. Our mobile phones are becoming an extension of our bodies. Literally. They could be giving us cancer-inducing radiation.

Electromagnetic Radiation From Your Cell Phone

There are two types of electromagnetic radiation:

Ionizing – high frequency and high energy (x-rays, cosmic rays, etc.)

Non-ionizing – low frequency and low energy (radio frequency, power frequency, etc.)

Mobile phones transmit a form of non-ionizing radiation from their antennas. This transmittance is how wireless calls and WiFi connections occur. Body tissues close to it absorb this energy.

The radiation is increased during active phone calls, but the exposure continues long afterward. A study was published in 2009 that measured the pelvic bone density in 150 men, all of whom wore their phones attached to their belt for 15 hours a day for about six years. The scientists found the bone mineral density was decreased on the side of the pelvis where the mobile was carried.

In one case, a woman with no predisposition for cancer became afflicted with multi-focal breast cancer. Her cancer specialists connected the dots, and the pattern and distribution of the cancerous cells outlined the shape of her cell phone. This seemed peculiar enough; then the woman explained that she is continuously tucking her phone into her bra.

A group of international scientists has appealed to the United Nations, citing concerning research findings, asking for extra initiatives to protect against EMF, electromagnetic field exposure.

The FCC created guidelines to measure the radiation in tissue by using the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). The SAR set a maximum for legal mobile phone radiation at 1.6 watts of energy absorbed per kilogram of body mass. This test uses the thermal effects of phone radiation.

The limit is 1.6, but some phones have come pretty close.

Protecting Yourself From Radiation

First of all, check to see if your mobile is particularly harmful and if you have one – change it.
Because, every time you come into contact with it, you will receive a higher amount of radiation than the other brands.
Keep children safe. Children are more susceptible to radiation, and this can cause behavior difficulties, emotional problems, social issues, and hyperactivity.

Reduce your usage. Turn off your phone when you are not using it; don’t just flick it to the sleep mode where it is still sending off carcinogenic energies.

Only make phone calls with good reception. The weaker the connection is, the more power your phone is using, thus the dangerous waves can penetrate your body even more deeply.
Don’t carry your phone on your body. Avoid putting it in your pocket, belt clip, or your bra!
The fewer layers between you and your phone, the more radiation is being shot into your body.
Keep your phone six inches from your body when it is in use. This perimeter is the most dangerous zone from radiation.
Use a shielded headset or speakers.

We’ve gone too far to be capable of giving up mobile phones entirely. Yet using them wisely can still spare us from unnecessary radiation. If you would incorporate healthier foods or habits into your life to protect yourself and your family from cancer, then putting boundaries on mobile phone usage falls under the same category.

Priorities- How to Beat Dad Bod Tip #2

How often do we turn around and say we are too busy? Is this true or are we simply not focussing on the priorities that make a difference in a log run?

If you didnt see Dad Bod Tip 1 see here.

Priorities. As Stephen Covey writes in his award winning book ‘ 7 habits of highly effective people’, “we say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to things several times a day”.  What we say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to is centered around our principles and our personal mission!

So I get it, lifes tough!  But what if we start saying ‘yes’ to more things that make us be the best versions of ourselves? This is a habit of highly effective people who put ‘first things first’. This means to work on the important things in our lives and start saying ‘no’ to urgent things that are not as important.  This may be a meeting or a mate really wanting you to join in on something you don’t really want to, but feel you need to. Try politely saying ‘no’, they will understand.

So how does exercise fit in? Well without good relationships/ family, a career and your health, it’s hard to be happy and satisfied! These are the three pillars, some would say, that lay the foundation for people to feel valuable and happy.

If your health and fitness is lacking then try blocking out times weekly to do some activity. Look at this as giving yourself a gift! i.e “I exercise as a tool to manage my stressful workload”. Or “I exercise to feel good about myself and this makes me able to do more with my family”.

Tip#2 Fitness is a gift not a chore- what do you/ will you (if about to start) receive from exercising?

Again for all men in May I have a 10 day Free Pass for you here at Kidman Park Gym Viva fitness.

My wife has asked me to start a blog for the guys (as she has the woman covered) so I wanted to touch on something that I get often… ‘The man I got a gut’ comment. This is also known as ‘Dad bod’.

Its true! One day you wake up and say, “Man, I got a gut (Aka Dad Bod), better do something about it”…
You tell someone, maybe cut carbs for a day or two and possibly even do a gym ‘sess’. You are on the up for a day, a week or maybe a month or two…. And then it happens…Life Strikes!

Yep, your new found habit is struck down by a sudden case of ‘life’ and bang, the man in you goes into ‘Mr Fix It’!

It could be that the Missus freaks out and needs help with the kids, or maybe work get’s really busy and needs your attention.  Whatever it is…. the man in you will fix it!

But at a cost! Your youth, your hair, your sex drive and even your health!

I have seen it time and time again (most of my mates are very similiar to my description) but there are some men out there who seem to have it all.

So what can we learn from such men to create healthier habits and be the best men we can be?

The best part is that a little bit goes a long way. So if you are the sort of man who wants to rock his life and perhaps wife for today, tomorrow and beyond then lets start with a little bit and see where it goes!

Frankincense oil is known as the King of Oils – and it truly deserves this title. I use it daily to promote my health and if I ever had to choose just one oil to have, it would be frankincense. Frankincense has a long history of being used as a prized and precious essential oil. Historically it was used by the Babylonians, Assyrians and Egyptians in religious ceremonies, and as a resin for balms and salves. And of course, the three wise men brought frankincense to the baby Jesus as an offering.

Frankincense is taken from Boswellias when it is extracted from the bark of the tree. The milky-white sap will quickly harden to a resin and then be scraped off the tree in the form of pear-shaped droplets. The color and quality of this resin varies greatly, from the highest quality (clear and silvery in color) to the lowest (of a brown-yellow hue).

Today, the essential oil, acquired by steam distillation of the resin, is widely used and holds great therapeutic value.

Try these 19 uses of Frankincense Oil;

1. Help with wounds from cuts, scrapes, and burns.  For even greater benefit, apply Lavender essential oil first then layer Frankincense on top.  The combination of these two oils together is amazing when it comes to helping with wounds.

2. Neurological support.

Frankincense is probably the best oil I know of for neurological support. It helps with the function of the central nervous system in particular. Whether it’s helping with clarity of thinking, or balancing the emotions, frankincense has a lot of benefits to offer.

3. Reduce and fade scars.  Just combine 2-3 drops of frankincense oil with coconut oil, and directly apply it on your skin.

4. Foster strong immune system.  Massage a few drops into the balls of your feet daily to boost your immune system. You can also diffuse it throughout your home or in your bedroom at night.

5. Reduce stress and anxious feelings.
Frankincense oil promotes relaxation and feeling of calm. You can simply rub a few drops mixed in a carrier oil on the back of the neck when you feel stressed.

6. Hormones and Memory
Frankincense can help balance hormones and improve memory.

7. Aging skin.   Mix a few drops of the Frankincense with unscented oil (like coconut) and apply to your skin. You can also add a drop of Frank to your daily moisturizer.

8. Head tension.  Frankincense can be used to relieve conditions where pain and tension are present.

9. Congestion.  Put up to six drops in a sink or bowl filled with very hot water then bend over the sink with a towel draped over your head to contain the steam. Breathe in the vapors for at least five minutes, adding more hot water as needed.  Be careful not to scald yourself; the water should be hot, not boiling.

10. Relieve itching.  A single drop applied to the affected area will bring immediate relief.

11. Relieve joint pain and swelling.  Mix with a carrier and rub into aching joints at night before bed and throughout the day,

12. Clear up problem skin.  Dab one drop on stubborn spots morning and night.

13. Relaxation.  Add 5 or 6 drops to a diffuser and breath in the oil to open the senses and create a calming atmosphere. To elevate your mood a few drops – as a perfume – works well.

14. Remove moles, skin tags, and warts.  Apply a single drop 3 or 4 times a day until gone.

15. Enhance vision.  Put 1-2 drops of Frankincense in your hand and then  rub your index finger in the oil and rub it onto each of your temple.  It can provide greater clarity to your vision and bring everything into greater focus.

16. Remove musty odors.  Place a couple of drops in a small dish of water and the room will take on a much fresher smell.

17. Oral Health: Useful as preventative measure against oral health problems such as bad breath, toothaches, cavities, canker sores, and other infections. Try mixing with baking soda and coconut oil to make your own toothpaste.

18. Promote sleep  Diffuse frankincense at bedtime to help you slow down your breathing and relieve nervous tension and anxiety.  You will sleep like a baby!

19. Enhance the efficacy of other essential oils.   Layer Frankincense over other essential oil to enhance that oil’s properties and drive the oils deeper into the cells.

Study: Thyme Plant extract revealed to be more effective than ibuprofen

Significant research has found thyme essential oil and its constituent thymol to be antiseptic. In fact, many mouth washes and cleaning products & antiseptic wipes often contain thyme oil.

New research is also finding that thyme oil also reduces pain. Who would have thought?

Well, traditional medicines have been using thyme oil and other essential oils to help relieve pain for centuries.

Study finds Thyme Oil beats out Ibuprofen for pain relief

Researchers from Iran’s Babol University of Medical Sciences has confirmed that thyme is not only an excellent pain-relieving herb. It also reduces pain of difficult menstruation better than ibruprofen.

The researchers tested 84 women university students who had reported difficult menstruation. The young women were aged between 18 and 24 years old. All were suffering from primary dysmenorrhea.

Primary dysmenorrhea is usually defined as painful cramping that may or may not come with other symptoms such as back ache, nausea, headaches and dizziness. Secondary dysmenorrhea usually indicates menses pain that is related to another underlying condition.

Here the researchers added to the definition of primary dysmenorrhea that it appears within two years of the beginning of menses (menarche) and no pelvic pain during the other parts of the monthly cycle. This is logical because painful menses is more frequently seen among younger women within the first few years of the beginning of menses

OTHER HEALTH BENEFITS OF THYME OIL

Antiseptic: Thyme essential oil is a good antiseptic and safeguards wounds and sores against infections. This is mainly due to the presence of components like Caryophyllene and Camphene in thyme.

Tonic: Thyme essential oil also tones up the circulatory system, heart, digestive system, nervous system, muscles, and skin while fortifying them and boosting immunity.

Hypertensive: You might raise your eyebrows about this medicinal property and may not see it as a benefit. However, this property is very beneficial for those who are suffering from low blood pressure. Those type of people run the risk of falling unconscious at any time, and feeling sluggish. This oil can normalize their blood pressure by raising it, which is just as important sometimes as lowering it. (NOT GOOD FOR THOSE WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE)

Antirheumatic: There are two main reasons behind rheumatism, arthritis and gout. The first is improper or obstructed circulation, and the second one is an increasing concentration of toxins like uric acid in the blood stream. Thyme essential oil can sort out both of these problems. Since it is a diuretic, it increases urination and helps in the removal of toxins from the body. Being a stimulant, it stimulates or activates circulation and thereby sorts out this problem in a separate way. Both ways helps cure rheumatism, and related conditions like arthritis.

Cleaning: Due to the large antiseptic qualities found in thyme oil – mixing with some water and spraying onto surfaces or fabrics and leaving to dry – will remove 99% of fungi and germ.

Additional uses include:

• Thyme is useful on infections of the urinary tract and bladder, and also acts as a diuretic, increasing its effectiveness

• Use to kill nail fungus

• Thyme is an ingredient in natural hand sanitizers

• Add thyme to a hot compress to relieve rheumatic pain, muscular aches and pains, sprains, sports injuries, sciatica, arthritis, gout

• Crush the fresh herb or use diluted oil as first aid on insect bites and stings

• Use on athlete’s foot. For this use, you can apply the oil neat, or undiluted, but protect the skin with some fatty cream. Other neat applications include animal bites and boils.

• Use a one percent solution as an antibacterial wash for fresh produce

• Use in hair and skin care regimes, as a hair tonic or in a face wash and for treatment of things like acne or warts

• Use thyme in a sitz bath or massage to stimulate menstruation for weak or missing periods

• Use to kill parasites

• Thymol, a chemical constituent in thyme essential oil, has been found to increase blood-flow to the skin, thought to speed healing

• Thymol has been found to protect and increase the percentage of healthy fats found in cell membranes

• Dietary consumption of thyme has been shown to increase the amount of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid) in brain, kidney, and heart cell membranes

• Thyme will discourage insects from invading your home

• Use thyme with rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood in a mixture of grapeseed and jojoba carrier oils to treat alopecia areata. According to the double-blind controlled clinical trial, massage the mixture into the scalp daily for several months.

• Because of the risk of irritation, it is a good idea to use thyme in blends. It blends particularly well with bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, lavender, rosemary and pine.

If you are interested in the cleaning products that use thyme oil – ask Laryssa or Kristy at Frontline about our Soluguard range from Melaleuca today!

We’ve all been there. The solution, you ask? Well, it’s sitting right in your kitchen cupboard. Ingredients for one of the best natural sleep remedies.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, you’re likely not in a relaxed enough state, mentally or physically. Perhaps you’re battling another annoying episode of insomnia, or maybe it was all those cups of coffee you had earlier in the day. It’s really frustrating getting into bed, watching the clock tick away until morning, not having slept a wink. There must be a better option than sleeping pills.

Why You Could Use Natural Sleep Remedies

Because for whatever reason, you can’t and aren’t getting enough sleep! It’s recommended that adults get a full 8 hours of sleep, but almost half of all adults are reported to get less than seven. Even sleeping 6-7 hours a night—a mere one hour less than what is recommended—can seriously impact your mental capabilities. It has been proven that the lack of sleep can lead to serious health problems, weight gain, and cognitive impairment.

Poor or irregular sleeping patterns can result from many things like stress or anxiety. For many, it’s common to go to bed with way too much on the mind; it’s difficult to disconnect from the stress that comes along with daytime life.

For others, a common problem is insomnia which can actually be caused by certain medications. Antihistamines, pain medications, and heart and blood medicine all contribute to sleep loss, despite sometimes causing temporary drowsiness. They often trigger anxiety or more frequent trips to the bathroom which further disturb your sleep.

The worst thing you can do is watch television before bed. Rather than make you tired—as we might think—it keeps your brain running at a high level since you’re concentrating on what you’re watching, preventing yourself from calming down.

Thankfully, this homemade natural sleep remedy for sleep deprivation will do the trick.

Honey: A Key to The Insomnia Cure

Before going to bed, mix a teaspoon of raw honey into a cup of warm milk (this can be any non-dairy variation that you have in your kitchen).
Mix 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with 1 teaspoon of raw honey and gulp before bed.
Follow the instructions below to make an under-the-tongue remedy:
You Want Me to Place WHAT Under My Tongue?

I know it sounds a little strange at first, but placing a mixture of sea salt and honey underneath your tongue before bed will send you off to sleep. The best part about this natural sleep remedies like this one is because everything you need is already in the kitchen. You won’t have to run out and buy anything fancy—the secret’s in the Himalayan sea salt.

Here’s What You Need

1 small glass jar
5 tablespoons of raw, organic honey
1 teaspoon of pink Himalayan sea salt

How to Craft the Insomnia Cure

Combine the raw, organic honey and the pink Himalayan sea salt in the glass jar and stir until it’s mixed well. Place a small amount under your tongue right before bed to avoid having trouble sleeping. Don’t worry about wasting the leftovers, you can save the rest for another night!

How the Sweet and Salty All Come Together

All great natural sleep remedies will contain two ingredients that help muscles relax. While honey produces serotonin, the sea salt regulates melatonin, together creating a no-fail sleep concoction that promises you relaxation.

Let’s Start with the Salty

First of all, Himalayan sea salt does more than just help you sleep. It offers up so many other benefits. It helps our adrenal glands fight disease; can assist with weight loss; and helps regulate serotonin levels in the brain, which is a neurotransmitter that controls mood, appetite and digestion, sleep, function and several other things. This pink salt also regulates melatonin, a hormone produced in the brain that specifically controls sleep and wake cycles.

Now for the Sweet Stuff

Ever wondered why we feel so sluggish on Christmas? Aside from eating twice our body weight in food, the answer lies in the meat. Turkey is one of those foods containing tryptophan, an amino acid that makes you feel sluggish and relaxed—just what we want! Lucky for us, honey also contains tryptophan, which is why this under-the-tongue remedy works so well.

Tryptophan is essential for our body to produce serotonin: the more we consume, the more serotonin our brains will create. Low serotonin levels have been associated with depression, anxiety and, you guessed it, poor sleeping habits. The most important thing to note here is that our body cannot produce tryptophan on its own which is why we must get it through diet (this is why it’s considered such an essential amino acid).

The world of natural sleep remedies is vast. But if poor sleeping habits are something you’ve been experiencing for a while, this mixture is worth trying. Not only do I love the taste of honey, but it has improved the quality and length of my sleep.

We hope this insomnia cure works as well for you as it does for many of us!
